Cabin Quilt

This pattern encompasses the changing colors and the woodsy feel that makes autumn my favorite season. This is also a great way to use a bunch of sock mini sets!

Gauge

18sc x 24 rows = 4″ (10cm) square

Measurements

Blocked: 42″ square

Materials

  • 2 set of Sewrella Yarn Autumn Tonal mini skeins in fingering weight (80yd/20g)
    • OR 1,600 yd 4-ply fingering weight yarn in varying colors (SEE NOTES BELOW)
  • 1 full skein of Sewrella Yarn Classic Sock in Cottage (Autumn tonal)
    • OR color you would like for border – (400 yd/100g)
  • US size D-3 (3.00mm) crochet hook)
  • 1 tapestry needle to weave in ends

Stitches Used (US terms)

yo – yarn over
ch – chain
sl – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ch sp – chain space
fo – fasten off

Notes

  • Beginning ch 3 counts as 1 dc
  • Beginning ch4 counts as 1dc + ch
  • When making squares with multiple colors, make sure to carry the previous color up through the beg ch to make it a more subtle color change

  • For the border, I used up both mini skeins of the color, plus 90g of the full skein for a total of 130g (520yd)
  • The nice thing about granny square quilts is you can customize them to use however many squares in whichever colors/pattern you like
  • If you are making the pattern as written with two sets of mini skeins (2 each of 9 colors) and a full skein plus 2 mini skeins for the border
  • Pattern makes 64 squares

Pattern

Simple Granny Square:

Create a Magic Circle: ch4 and sl to 1st ch made

Round 1: ch 3, 2 dc in center circle, ch3, *3dc, ch3*, repeat from * 2 more times, sl to 3rd ch of beg ch3 to join. ( You should now have 4 clear sides of 3 dc with ch3 spaces in the corners)

Round 2: ch 4 (counts as 1dc and 1 ch sp), *in the next corner ch3: sp [3dc, ch3, 3dc, ch1]*, repeat from * 1 more time, in the next corner ch3 space: 3dc, ch3, 2dc, sl to join to 3rd ch of beg by 4

Round 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in next ch1 sp, ch1, *in the next corner ch 3 sp: [3dc, ch3, 3dc in same sp], ch1, 3dc in next ch1 sp, ch1*, repeat from * 3 times. In next corner sp [3dc, ch3, 3dc], ch1, sl join to 3rd ch of beg ch3.

Continue in pattern as written below until you have used 5g or made a ~4.5” (11.5cm) square. fo and weave in ends.

  • Beginning of row, ch3 or ch4 depending on if it is the first or last of a 3dc cluster
  • In ch1 spaces: 3dc, ch1
  • In ch3 (corner) spaces: 3dc, ch3, 3dc, ch1
  • End of row, sl to 3rd ch of beg ch3 or ch4 to join

I made a total of 6 rounds to reach size

Joining

Before you join, I recommend you lay out the squares in the order you would like them and take a picture so you remember when to join which square. This pattern uses a seamless joining (no sewing necessary).

Starting with the bottom left corner square, join border yarn to a corner ch3 sp and chain 3 (counts as dc), dc in same stitch, ch1. Continue across as if adding a row of the granny square pattern above.

Non Join As You Go (NON-JAYGO) Rows: Work across as if adding a row of the granny square pattern above

Join As You Go (JAYGO) Rows: 3dc in a corner space of the next square, sl to corresponding ch1 space on the previous square (this replaces the ch1 space for the granny square pattern). Continue across

Border (optional)

You don’t necessarily need the border for this pattern, but I think it evens out the shape a bit, so I made a simple dc border.

Make 1dc in every dc and ch 1 space around, 2dc in every ch3 space along an edge (where you turned the corner for a given square), and 5 dc in the 4 corners of the blanket.

FO and weave in all ends. Block blanket to hold its square shape.
